JINXED

“NO WAY,” HE SAID. THERE it was, written by the woman Layna never knew, the woman no one knew, the woman who never went to school at Trask. Layna flipped through it voraciously, but Crosby felt compelled to leave. “Great, you’ve got it. Can we look at it somewhere else? Like, anywhere that’s not here?” There was an urgency in his tone.

Layna remained engrossed in the words, her fingers moving from page to page, her eyes from phrase to phrase.

“Hello,” Crosby said. “I’ve decided creepy is not in season, but somehow we’re standing in the middle of it. Let’s. Go.” He reached for Layna’s arm.

She pulled away, her eyes not veering from their down position. “Just gimme a second!”

Crosby huffed. He kept quiet, looked around, and then pointed at his wrist as if he wore a watch. He cleared his throat once, but Layna did nothing. He cleared it again, louder, and she looked up at him quizzically. “My pretend watch is telling me it’s time to get out of here for real,” he said.

Layna shook her head. “Fine, I get it.” She grabbed the manuscript. “Is there anything else in the file?”

Crosby looked into the drawer as fast as humanly possible. “Nope! Time to go.” He readied to leave, but Layna didn’t budge. He saw she was confused. Hurt. “What’s wrong?” he asked.

“The last act of the play. It’s missing.”

Crosby marched back and slammed shut the file cabinet drawer with a loud clang. “And, we’re done,” he said. “Let’s go.”

They did just that. Layna led the way, and Crosby watched as she clung to the manuscript with her small hands. “We need to find the others, and fast,” he said. The tone of his voice was full of worry, though he tried to mask it.

Layna slowed and turned toward him. She stayed silent, but the look on her face let Crosby know that she was worried, too.

He nodded, and just wanted them to get out of there.

Then, he stopped. He held his arm out to stop Layna and put a finger to his lips. His eyes went wide, then the same finger went to his ear.

They were not alone.

Crosby craned his neck to listen to the voices. There were two people, whispering. He pulled Layna back from the main walkway. The two of them stood tall and straight against the shelves behind them as the hushed voices carried through the great building, getting closer.

And closer.

The tall shadows of two people stretched across the ground, nearing where Crosby and Layna stood. Crosby could not yet make out the voices, nor could he decipher what they said. But the secrecy with which they spoke worried him.

He turned his head back the way they had come and squinted. He kept his voice as quiet as possible. “We’re stuck. Even if we ran, they’d see us before we turned a corner.”

The shadows of the interlopers were close enough to touch. Worry forced blood into Crosby’s head. His cheeks and ears turned red and hot.
